Campaign reveals AMD awareness gap
A Red C poll, commissioned by Novartis for Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) Awareness Week, reveals a general lack of knowledge about the condition.
The research showed that just 35% of the public knew AMD is the leading cause of sight loss in Ireland for those over 50, while 49% had never heard of the more severe form, wet AMD.
The theme for the campaign, which ran from 20-26 September, was 'See the Full Story'. It highlighted the enjoyment of reading as we age and the impact of AMD on daily living tasks.
Campaign ambassador and former RTÉ newsreader Anne Doyle said: "We need to get the message out that if you experience blurred vision or distortion, you need to get tested for AMD straightaway."
