Sight Test Funding 2025
As you will know, FODO Ireland has been chasing the DSP and the Department of Health for funding for sight tests, working in liaison with Optometry Ireland.
Recent responses to Parliamentary Questions (PQs) have helped to provide some insight into the government's current position.
The DSP has reaffirmed its commitment to an annual review of the treatment benefit scheme, which has been described as a priority. They are engaging with relevant stakeholders to bring the review to a conclusion and confirmed that all panellists providing services under the scheme will be contacted. The timeline for informing contractors about the review's outcome has yet to be confirmed. Full response available - https://www.oireachtas.ie/en/debates/question/2025-04-10/291/#pq_291
The Department of Health has acknowledged the essential role of optometrists in eye health and outlined current community-based services, including COSS and services for children under 16. Work is ongoing to explore the best way to expand the scope of practice of optometrists, but no specific timeline or budget has been given for this. Garvan Mulligan, Chair of FODO Ireland, said:
"We have been in touch with Minister Calleary and are seeking clarity on the outcome of the Optical Treatment Benefit contract review.
The delay in announcing the outcome is causing real difficulty and serious disruption in the sector. Crucial investments which will improve services for patients and create jobs are being put on hold because of the uncertainty this unexpected delay is causing".
We know this is a very difficult time for our members and the wider primary eye care sector. FODO Ireland remains committed to holding the government accountable and ensuring it delivers on its duties and promises.
We will keep members updated as soon as we receive the promised communication from government.
